KICKIN' IT OFF: Pigskin Preview takes moment to honor late Don Shea | The ... - Durham Herald Sun

Once the guy who took over a football program in shambles, David Cutcliffe could look around the dais at Thursday’s Pigskin Preview luncheon with supreme confidence.

Of the five Division I head football coaches speaking at the event at the Embassy Suites hotel, the 60-year-old Cutcliffe had the most tenure at his school.

Now in his eighth season at Duke, Cutcliffe has been at his current job longer than East Carolina’s Ruffin McNeill (sixth season), North Carolina’s Larry Fedora (fourth season), N.C. State’s Dave Doeren (third season) and N.C. Central’s Jerry Mack (second season).

Duke, of course, is no longer the downtrodden program that Cutcliffe took over in December 2007. The Blue Devils have won 19 games over the past two seasons and played in bowl games following the last three seasons.

Only McNeill, who has led East Carolina to 18 wins over the last two seasons, comes close to Cutcliffe’s on-field success among the area’s head coaches.

When Cutcliffe’s opportunity to speak arrived Thursday, he used it to not only talk about this year’s Blue Devils but to also take a poignant look back at a voice missing from Thursday’s luncheon.

Don Shea, the event’s longtime emcee, died at age 77 last February. A well-known television personality and former Durham Morning Herald (now The Herald-Sun) writer who was active in charitable fundraising efforts around the Triangle, Shea’s flamboyance and humor was always on display at the Pigskin Preview.

Cutcliffe noted how sad he felt that Shea is gone. But he also took a good-natured barb at his friend.

“I had no idea that he would go to this extreme measure to make me the oldest person at this table,” Cutcliffe joked. “He always made note of my age as we went through. God rest his soul. He is greatly missed.”

WRAL TV sportscaster Jeff Gravley took over the emcee role this year and, instead of asking for a moment of silence, requested and received a...
