'Backward' Hong Kong could lose its shopping paradise status, says HKTV's ... - South China Morning Post (subscription)
Technology entrepreneur Ricky Wong Wai-kay has launched a massive campaign to publicise his e-commerce platform in the hope of revamping Hong Kong's retail business.
But the outspoken boss of Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV) said he had yet to give up on his TV dreams despite unresolved licence issues. Construction of a multimedia centre in Tseung Kwan O will resume this year and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017.
Wong said Hong Kong had been too backward in terms of its retail business model and consumer behaviour, and would soon lose its status as a "shopping paradise".

The value of retail sales in June fell 0.4 per cent year on year to HK$37 billion, following a 0.1 per cent decline in May.

"Hong Kong's retail industry is facing great challenges. Consumers, retailers and suppliers must adapt to such changes."
Wong said that since the launch of HKTV Mall in February, he had been told by many that online shopping would not take off in Hong Kong, but he still pressed ahead, believing it would be the future.
HKTV Mall would also venture into overseas markets such as Singapore, Malaysia and other places with Chinese-speaking residents once the Hong Kong business was firmly established, he added.
Wong described the latest version of HKTV Mall as "a department store like Sogo plus a supermarket". It offers more than 70,000 items ranging from fast-moving goods like daily necessities to high-priced items like HK$40,000 diamond jewellery.
Meanwhile, HKTV is still waiting to hear from the government about its second application to...Source: www.scmp.com
