Finns watch plenty of films and television shows online - Helsinki Times
Finns are avid users of video-on-demand services.
A report published by the European Commission shows that after the United Kingdom the Nordics lead the way in the use of subscription-based video streaming services in Europe. Consumers in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway spent a total of 148 million euros in video streaming services in 2013, accounting for 28.4 per cent of the spending in all of Europe.
The use of video-on-demand services increased sharply specifically in 2013 – by as much as 267 per cent in the Nordics. The breakneck growth is partly attributable to the fact that several subscription-based streaming services, such as Netflix and HBO Nordic, have been available in the region already since 2012.
The report published by the European Commission shows that Netflix alone had an estimated 370,000 subscribers in Finland a year ago. The number of subscribers is forecast to increase to up to 856,000 by 2020.

The percentage includes the users of free, pay-per-view and subscription-based streaming services. The survey also found that the share of Finns who pay for streaming services has grown by 12 percentage points to 23 per cent since last year.
A survey conducted by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (Ficora), in turn, found that 61 per cent of Finns use domestic streaming services, such as YLE Areena, Katsomo and Ruutu. All of the services are available for free, although both Katsomo and Ruutu offer additional content to subscribers.
The services are particularly popular among 18—24-year-old Finns, with nearly 80 per cent of the age group reporting that they use the services.
Pay-per-view and subscription-based streaming services are used by roughly a quarter of Finns, according to Ficora. The findings are in...Source: www.helsinkitimes.fi
