Production company building new complex in The Bronx - New York Post
The Bronx is going Hollywood.
Film-and television-production company Silvercup Studios is expanding to the borough with a $35 million complex in Port Morris, slated to open next year, officials announced Monday.
The company’s studios in Long Island City, Queens, opened in 1983 and have been home to hits such as “Sex and the City,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “30 Rock,” “Gossip Girl” and “The Sopranos.”
But with the Big Apple’s production industry for film and TV booming, Silvercup Studios needed more space.
“The Bronx is undergoing a tremendous revitalization right now,” said Silvercup CEO Alan Suna. “We’re excited to expand our studios here as the industry continues to grow and to bring with it high-quality production jobs and the resulting benefits from having this production work remain in New York.”
The new location, at 295 Locust Ave., will be called Silvercup North. It will feature a 150,000-square-foot full-service production facility and four production studios with 50-foot-high ceilings — to be the highest of any city production studio.
In addition to injecting money into the local community, the $35 million project is expected to provide an estimated 80 to 100 construction jobs and another 400 “well-paying” production-industry jobs to the area, officials said.
“My office has been working to expand the film industry in The Bronx for several years, and we are thrilled to welcome Silvercup Studios,” Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. said.
Silvercup will now operate more than 500,000 square feet of New York studio space, more than any other production company in the city.
The company’s expansion comes as the movie and TV industries continue to pump more than $7 billion into the city’s economy each year.
Silvercup has been home to many productions recently, including “Girls,” “Elementary” and “Madam Secretary.” It has also hosted several music-video...Source: nypost.com
